About Us

VICKY lives in Montreal, the second-largest French-speaking city in the world (after Paris), which means that English books are harder to come by. To palliate this problem, she owns three library cards and now lives in Toronto and still browses diligently through used bookstores. She is a graduate student, and it remains to be seen whether this means she has more or less time to blog. She really likes fiction about girls, including girl detectives, girl violinists, orphan girls, teenage girls, pioneer girls, girls who are writers, girls who befriend Nazis, girls who time travel, princesses, and babysitters. She also enjoys reading about boys, adults, and Psammeads.

POLLY lives several blocks from the main library branch in not-Montreal, which she raids for books of all kinds and the occasional movie. She was recently given an iPad and iPhone for work, a Sony Reader and finds it useful for reading PDF files for work, taking knitting patterns on the bus, reading out-of-print or copyright-free classics of all kinds, and carrying around a French translation of Anna Karenina so that she can feel that she will one day read it.  and ever since installing OverDrive has started madly downloading everything.  She has given up on Anna Karenina and instead has other, shorter, unread French novels in her iBooks as well as knitting patterns.  She doesn’t have a favourite children’s author, but reads and rereads many books, including (most recently): The Hounds of the Morrigan by Pat O’Shea, The Power of One by Diana Wynne Jones, Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian, I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith, the Narnia chronicles by C.S. Lewis, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith, and anything written by Edward Eager (who was introduced to her by Vicky!)  Now that she has two kids (0 and 2 1/2) she mostly reads board books and picture books with the occasional YA eBook.  She loves picture books for their whimsy and their art, and especially loves David McKean, Peter Sis and Shaun Tan.
